Steve Kinney
Entrepreneur in Residence at Redpoint
About
I'm Steve Kinney, currently an Entrepreneur in Residence at Redpoint where I'm diving deep into the world of AI developer tools and agentic workflows. My path here has been a bit of a journey—I started my career as a Special Education teacher in NYC before moving into engineering leadership roles at places like SendGrid, Twilio, and most recently as Head of Engineering at Temporal. I’ve always had one foot in education, whether it was founding the frontend program at the Turing School or writing 'Electron in Action.' I’m deeply passionate about the concept of 'Craft' in software—the idea that even in an age of AI-generated code, discernment and taste are what separate great products from 'slop.' Right now, I’m focused on how AI can augment human skill rather than just replace it, and I’m exploring how 'Personal Software' might eventually disrupt the SaaS model. I love connecting with people who care about building meaningful tools and strong communities.

Opinions
- The difference between high-quality software and AI-generated 'slop' is 'Craft'—defined by discernment and taste.
- Professional-grade AI results require engineers with an insane attention to detail; AI is a tool, not a replacement.
- Developers often fall into the 'Developer Tool Trap' by building what is familiar rather than solving more important industry problems.
- Micro-frontends are a complex topic with significant trade-offs.
