I'm Erik Smith, a Distinguished Engineer at Dell Technologies currently focused on the intersection of AI Infrastructure and Agentic AI. My career has been a long-term evolution within Dell, moving from technical support and storage networking into pioneering how AI agents coordinate and act safely. I’m a big believer in 'learning-by-building' and have spent much of my time creating open-source tools like ProtoViz to help others peek inside the black box of complex protocols and AI mechanics. I’m passionate about reducing 'signal loss' in engineering through my Vibe-to-Spec methodology—building working prototypes to define requirements rather than relying on static decks. I love connecting with infrastructure architects and developers who are interested in bridging the gap between hardware and AI workloads. Whether it's discussing the nuances of NVMe/TCP or the future of augmented cognition, I'm always looking for ways to share knowledge and build something tangible together.

Opinions

Traditional handoffs cause 'signal loss'; we should build prototypes first and generate specs from behavior (Vibe-to-Spec).
The barrier to entry for new fields has disappeared because AI can 'meet you where you are' during the building process.
AI systems must act in ways that are understandable, accountable, and aligned with human safety.
